This year we will be among many cycling clubs across the country honoring Marshall W. "Major" Taylor, who was born on Nov. 26, 1878. In conjunction with the Major Taylor Association, we will bring brothers and sisters together to remember and provide a tribute to Major Taylor. Every year the association partners with a series of tribute rides across the country in honor of world-champion cyclist Marshall “Major" Taylor's birthday. This is the Virginia chapter’s inaugural Major Taylor Birthday ride on Zwift. The club will provide the history of Major Taylor before the ride on our discord channel.
In this VA chapter, we would have both a digital (Zwift) and IRL (In Real Life) ride for hundreds of cyclists across the country to join in the commemorative recognition of Taylor’s incredible story and lifetime achievements. Maj. Taylor won the sprint event at the 1899 World Track Championships in Montreal, Canada, and became the first African American to win a world championship in cycling and the second black athlete to win a World Championship in any sport. To commemorate the sprint champ, we would like to have intermediate sprint points along our digital route.
If you look closely at the marker about the rider's head, we will be split into two main groups commonly referred to as leader/sweeper. The yellow beacon (leader) will be the faster group and will try out the sprint points. The second group will be the C/D pace with the amber beacon (sweeper). Regardless of the club you hail from, we are glad you decided to commune with MTCCVA.
